Let the Savings Begin: Starting a Carpool

Thinking about carpooling, but don’t know how to get started? Carpooling reduces congestion thereby saving driving time, can reduce driving stress, and gives you an opportunity to develop new friendships with co-workers or other commuters in your carpool. Getting started is easy and rewarding so start today!

Tips for starting a carpool:

  • Connect with co-workers or friends who live near you, or sign up on Drive Less Connect to find rideshare matches. Meet your prospective carpooler(s) at a local coffee shop or other public space to discuss details to ensure that schedules, driving styles, musical tastes, etc. are compatible.
  • Create a schedule for driving responsibilities, determine your route, schedule, morning pickup points and other logistical details.
  • Establish a method for splitting driving costs.
  • Establish policies about pick-up times, smoking or nonsmoking, food and beverages in the car, length of time the carpool should wait for riders, and other details. Respect your fellow carpoolers’ wishes, drive carefully, and keep the vehicle clean and safe.
  • Establish a chain of communication. If a driver or member is ill or will not be going to work one day, members need to be notified and an alternate driver should be in place if necessary.
  • Set a date to start carpooling. If you are hesitant, you may want to do a trial run for a week to make sure it works for everyone in the carpool.
